In order to enable a consultation as detailed and exhaustive as possible, the site has been designed to offer a series of cross references and multimedia links between the various subjects.

The single-subject records which are the main content of the database are arranged in chronological order, marking out the principal phases in the history of the palazzo. Within this time-scale, the records are then grouped by subject: the people of the Palazzo, the inhabitants, the regular visitors and the illustrious guests, focusing in particular on the two ancient families which owned the Palazzo at different times (the Medici and the Riccardi); the events which have marked the history of the building and the daily life which took place in it, reflecting the society of the time; the rooms/areas, works of art and collections which splendidly adorned the various areas of the Palazzo over the centuries; finally, the immediate and more remote surroundings of the Palazzo and beyond, that is the relation of the building to its context within the city and the territory, and also to other more distant cultural centres within Italy and Europe.

The records are supported by a vast range of documentary, iconographical and bibliographical material, which is described in detail in the archives of the Mediateca. The PMR Archive provides a very useful preliminary tool for anyone approaching research connected with Palazzo Medici Riccardi. Connected with this is the General Archive comprising the catalogues of the entire Bibliography cited in the Mediateca and the Photo Archive comprising all the available images.
To simplify the navigation, search and processing of the selected materials, each user has a personal folder where he or she can collect the bibliographical details, records and images of interest, and then read, process, print or save them.
